"I was blessed to experience this INCREDIBLE, RARE, and SCARY moment today. The weather was once again amazing here in Anchorage, so I decided to do another hike out to the Portage Glacier.

I wanted to get a photo fairly close but still in a safe spot so I walked over to land next to the glacier. Very shortly after I got to land, I heard the ice begin to crack, and each second it grew more intense. So I pulled out my phone and took this video! A giant piece of ice the size of a house weighing probably tens of thousands of pounds fell right in front of me!

I think this will be my last time on the ice for this season, since it’s all cracked up now. Usually I get a bit closer, but just yesterday, a great friend Cindy Carlton warned me that if the glacier calves, sometimes the ice chunks can fall under the ice and create a wave buckling the ice upwards. Thank you for your excellent advice! If you hadn’t warned me, I would’ve still been on the ice, and a lot closer."

Huge Icebergs collapsing and breaking from the Ilulissat Glacier are often up to 3,000 feet in height (1,000 meter) and are broken up by the force of the glacier and icebergs further up the fjord. sub_confirmation=1Greenland is home to the only permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica. The sheet covers 3/4 of Greenland's land mass. The Ilulissat Icefjord drains 6.5% of the Greenland ice sheet and produces around 10% of all Greenland icebergs. Some 35 billion tonnes of icebergs calve off and pass out of the fjord every year. In the last 25 years, the Greenland Ice Sheet is rapidly melting, having lost 3.8 trillion tons of ice between 1992 and 2018, a new study from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) finds. The melting ice has added 0.4 inches (11 millimeters) to sea level rise. Its cumulative 3.8 trillion tons of melted ice is equivalent to adding the water from 120 million Olympic-size swimming pools to the ocean every year. Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres. These events have become major tourist attractions. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone. How Airlines Clean and Disinfect Their Planes?

Last week, I was shown by Etihad Airways how they clean and disinfect their Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Abu Dhabi.

The cleaning crew and I changed into Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) outfit covered from head to toe. The cleaning start from rear to front, top to bottom using cleaning and disinfecting agent Bacoban and disposable cloth.

Etihad Cleaning manager Anthony Foreman explains how the airline handle the cleaning and disinfecting after flying to high risk area.

I was shown the cleaning performed in all cabin, galley, toilet and cargo hold. I was also shown how they change the air filter inside the airplane. I was explained how HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Absorbing) work to ensure the air circulation is of the same standard as operating theatre in hospital.

This video shows the deep clean and disinfect procedures. Only planes on ground over 4 hours or flown to/from high risk area are performed with such cleaning procedure. Planes with tight turnaround will only perform routine cleaning.
