Protests erupted in prisons across Italy on March 9, 2020, after the government imposed limits on visits as a measure to try and contain the spread of the coronavirus. At least six inmates died in one prison in the northern city of Modena amid the protests. Italy meanwhile expanded a lockdown to cover the nation’s entire 60 million population, people can only travel for work, medical reasons or emergencies until April 3.
