Minnesota police shooting of Daunte Wright during traffic stop sparks protests
Editor's Note: The mother of Daunte Wright is named Katie, not Kate.
Protests erupted in the community of Brooklyn Center, Minn. after police shot and killed a Black man on Sunday during a traffic stop. During the protests later that evening, authorities fired flash bangs, rubber bullets and smoke bombs to disperse the crowds.
According to police, officers had pulled over a man — who family identified as Daunte Wright — for a traffic violation just before 2 p.m., and found he had an outstanding arrest warrant. Police said as they tried to arrest the 20 year old man, he re-entered his vehicle. One officer then shot him, police said. Wright drove several blocks before striking another vehicle to die at the scene. Police said both officers' body cameras were activated during the incident.
Minnesota officials said early Monday during a briefing that they had received reports people were at a shopping complex and approximately 20 businesses were broken into. Police responded to the scene, entering some businesses and shouting at people to surrender if they were inside.
The protests occurred as tensions continue to mount in the state as the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin continues in Minneapolis.
