Officer-involved shooting in Brooklyn Center

An investigation is underway after a Brooklyn Center police officer shot and killed a man Thursday night.

Police say a man wielding a rifle with a scope was walking down the middle of the street near 53rd and Emerson Avenues North.

Brooklyn Center Police Chief Kevin Benner says the man was ordered to drop his weapon multiple times but never did. It led to police firing shots. One resident in the area says she didn't hear any shouting before the fatal shots.

"I heard some bangs, but I figured it was just an every night thing, you know, so I was going to go to sleep and Eric knocked on my bedroom door and said 'you got to come out here, there's a guy down on the ground and there's cops there," said Cameo Sahara, a resident who lives nearby.

Flowers now lay at the scene where the man was shot. Friends identified the shooting victim as 20-year-old Dantay Wright, who was set to graduate from Brooklyn Center Academy.

The name of the officer involved in the shooting has not been released.
