Congress Affirms Biden As President After Completing Electoral Vote Count
Matthew Whitaker is the acting Attorney General who reportedly has no intention of recusing himself from the Mueller probe he repeatedly criticized. Here’s why Trump turned a former hot tub salesman with little experience into the nation’s top law enforcement official. Michael G. Whitaker was born in 1969 in Ankeny, Iowa, a suburb of Des Moines. In 1995, he received his Juris Doctor degree and a master’s degree in finance from the university’s school of business. Upon graduation, Whitaker went into practice as a lawyer for a handful of regional law firms. He was also corporate counsel for a national grocery company. In 2002, with experience in arguing for grocery stores, he decided to take his talents to public office. As a Republican, Whitaker ran unsuccessfully for state treasurer of Iowa, losing the race to the incumbent Democrat. By 2004, Whitaker finally locked down a position in politics It was a position that didn’t have to be voted on - so he won! He was appointed the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa where he served for 5 years, until the Obama administration took over. Whitaker then thought he’d try his hand at running for the highest chamber of Congress. He ran as a Republican in Iowa for the United States Senate. But Whitaker’s arguably most troubling idea came when he said he would only support federal judges who have a biblical worldview. In a 2014 debate, Whitaker went pretty hard at the idea of a secular judge - even though the office of a U.S. Senator is secular. "If they have a secular worldview, then I'm going to be very concerned about how they judge," he said. The Des Moines Register notes that what he was effectively saying was, “if elected, he would see no place for a judge of Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, agnostic or other faith, or of no faith.” After news broke that Donald Jr. had met with a Russian lawyer who was offering dirt on Hillary Clinton, Whitaker came to bat for the president’s adult son. Continuing his quest to become a blip on Trump’s radar, Whitaker retweeted a Philadelphia Inquirer article titled, “Note to Trump’s Lawyer: Do Not Cooperate With Mueller Lynch Mob.” All of this was seemingly music to Trump’s ears as—just a month after Whitaker’s hit piece on Mueller’s probe dropped—Attorney General Jeff Sessions hired him as his chief of staff. On November 7, 2018, Trump forced Sessions to resign. The latest move in his slow-motion Saturday night massacre. The president’s reason for bypassing Rod Rosenstein, the guy who’s actually senate confirmed, for Matthew Whitaker is pretty clear by now.
Dems Take Control of Senate, as Ossoff Is Declared Winner in GA. Democrat Jon Ossoff defeated Republican Senator David Perdue in one of two runoff elections for the U.S. Senate seats of GA. Ossoff's victory was announced amid the chaos at the U.S. Capitol building ...... in which the rioting of a pro-Trump mob shut down the acceptance of the Electoral College results. The other Democratic winner of the day was Rev. Raphael Warnock, who defeated Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler. Warnock is the first Black Democratic Senator ever to be elected in a Southern U.S. state. The election results mean that Democrats have obtained a slim majority in the Senate. With a 50-50 tally of Republican and Democratic Senators, Democratic Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will act as the tie-breaking vote once she is sworn in. Following Trump's single term as president, Democrats now have control of the White House and both Houses of Congress
The electoral college is poised to pick Trump, despite push to dump him <br />Donald Trump is on the verge of being officially declared the winner of the 2016 presidential election, as the electoral college meets on Monday to officially seal his victory. The usually overlooked, constitutionally obligated gatherings of 538 electors in 50 states and the District of Columbia continued throughout the day with no sign of defections among electors poised to vote for Trump. By mid-afternoon, Trump was poised to top the 270 electoral votes needed to become president. Results will be officially announced on Jan. 6 in a special joint session of Congress. How does the electoral college actually vote? An explainer. Democrat Hillary Clinton amassed a nearly 3 million-vote lead in the popular vote, but Trump won the state-by-state electoral map — making him president-elect. That political dichotomy has sparked special scrutiny and intense lobbying of electors by Trump’s opponents, including last-minute protests across the country. On Monday in Austin, more than 100 people braved cold temperatures to rally at the Texas state capitol ahead of an afternoon meeting of electors. In Utah, protesters booed and shouted “shame on you” as the state’s six electors cast votes for Trump in a state capitol conference room in Salt Lake City. In Pennsylvania, which voted for a Republican president for the first time since 1988, a few hundred shell-shocked Democrats protested at the state capitol in Harrisburg while 20 electors backed Trump. In Florida, a crucial swing state where Trump defeated Clinton by about a percentage point, Trump won all 29 electoral votes Monday afternoon. A few minutes later, Trump clinched all 16 votes in Michigan, another state that flipped to Republicans for the first time since 1988. On the streets of Washington, two dozen protesters assembled outside Trump’s hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, singing songs such as “We Shall Overcome.” Some held signs, including one that read, “Resist Putin’s Puppet.” The District’s three electors will meet Monday afternoon at city hall, which is just a block from Trump’s hotel. In Albany, N.Y., former president Bill Clinton sat in the State Senate chamber as an elector and cast one of the Empire State’s 29 electoral votes for his wife. “I’ve never cast a vote I was prouder of,” he told reporters after the meeting. The mostly symbolic calls for an electoral college rejection of Trump have grown following revelations of a CIA assessment of Russian hacking that could have boosted Trump’s campaign and, in the view of many Trump critics, raised doubts about his legitimacy.

Jacksonville, Florida — The State Attorney’s Office Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida in Duval County has released its report and body camera video from the investigation into the officer-involved shooting of former FAMU student Jamee Johnson. The SAO has determined that the officer who shot Jamee Johnson back in December 2019 was justified in his use of force. The officer-involved shooting took place at approximately 5:00 p.m. on December 14, 2019. On this date, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (“JSO”) Officer Josue Garriga (“Officer Garriga”) was deployed as part of a JSO initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. While working on this deployment initiative, Officer Garriga conducted a traffic stop of Jamee Johnson (“Johnson”) for driving without a seatbelt, a violation of Florida Statute section 316.614(4). After pulling Johnson over, Officer Garriga observed a strong odor of marijuana coming from Johnson’s car. Officer Garriga immediately noted that Johnson was nervous and making furtive movements. Officer Garriga asked Johnson to stop moving erratically and provide him with his identification. An inquiry pursuant to the traffic stop followed. Officer Garriga asked whether Johnson had “anything” in his car, a routine question aimed at both officer safety and crime intervention. When Johnson offered that he had a firearm in the car, Officer Garriga asked Johnson to step out of his car. As Johnson stepped out of his car, Officer Garriga noted that Johnson had marijuana flakes on his shirt. Officer Garriga posed a series of questions to Johnson regarding the smell of marijuana and the marijuana flakes on his shirt. Johnson explained that the flakes were hemp. Officer Garriga next questioned Johnson about the firearm in the car. Johnson admitted that he did not have a concealed weapons permit and further explained that the firearm was not secured as required by law. Officer Garriga asked that Johnson sit in the back of his patrol car while he obtained Johnson’s receipt for the firearm. Inexplicably, and for reasons we can only speculate, Johnson shoved Officer Garriga in the chest and jumped headfirst into his car toward the very gun he had just described to Officer Garriga. Officer Garriga dove after Johnson to prevent him from accessing the gun. During the struggle, Johnson placed the car in drive and crashed through a fence into a nearby yard, dragging Officer Garriga along the way. While Officer Garriga was inside the car struggling with Johnson, the struggle turned deadly when Johnson grasped his gun and lifted the gun toward Officer Garriga’s face. Officer Garriga immediately tried to hide behind Johnson’s head, to avoid being shot. Officer Garriga pushed himself out of the car and, believing Johnson was armed, fired until Johnson no longer posed a threat. Johnson suffered multiple gunshot wounds and fell to the ground outside the car. Officer Garriga contemporaneously, and without time for reflection, told his backup officer, Officer Kristopher Graham, that Johnson “tried to grab his gun on me.” Johnson immediately responded, “I’m ready to give up.” Officer Garriga yelled at Johnson: “Don’t grab the gun.” Johnson immediately responded, “My hands are off it.” Officer Garriga and Officer Graham commanded Johnson not to move and continued to yell at Johnson, asking where the gun was located. Johnson replied, “It’s in the car...” Johnson’s admissions corroborated Officer Garriga’s recount that he was fighting Johnson for the gun. Johnson suffered the following four gunshot wounds during the incident: a gunshot wound to the left side of the chest; a gunshot wound to the left side of the back; a gunshot wound on the posterior aspect of the right elbow; and a gunshot wound on the anterior and lateral aspects of the right hip. Johnson was transported to the hospital where he died in surgery from his wounds. The two gunshot wounds to the torso caused Johnson’s death. After thorough investigation, The State Attorney’s Office renders the legal opinion that Officer Garriga’s actions were lawful and justified as defined in applicable Florida law. They reached this opinion after a comprehensive review of the evidence and the consultation of an independent expert in the field of policing, including the use of force, police tactics, body-worn camera usage, and industry practices and standards.
Bodycam Shows SLCPD Shooting After Suspect Points Gun at Officers
Minneapolis, Minnesota — The Hennepin County judge Peter Cahill overseeing the George Floyd case has made the body worn cameras from ex-officers Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng available. The video, taken from the body worn cameras shows Kueng and Lane responding to a convenience store on May 25 on a report that Floyd had allegedly used a fake $20 bill. Their former colleagues, Tou Thao and Derek Chauvin, later showed up to assist. The footage follows Lane and Kueng as they apprehend Floyd and two acquaintances. Lane holds Floyd at gunpoint and handcuffs him, and the officers briefly question the visibly panicked man before attempting to get him into their patrol SUV. After struggling to get him into the police squad, Floyd is eventually held down by officers on the ground. Floyd is heard calling to his mother, repeatedly saying he can’t breathe and that everything hurts. After a few minutes, Senior officers Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao arrive and help wrestle him to the ground. Chauvin then places his knee on Floyd’s neck, where it stays for over nine minutes. Lane and Kueng hold down Floyd’s back and knees as Thao keeps increasingly agitated bystanders at bay. Chauvin gets up after paramedics arrive and load Floyd into an ambulance. Lane accompanies them and administers CPR as they take Floyd to an out-of-the-way street corner, while Kueng goes back into Cup Foods interviewing an employee about the alleged counterfeit $20 bill and collecting evidence.
Warning: this unedited body camera footage from former Minneapolis police officers Tou Thao contains graphic imagery and language that some may find difficult to watch. Viewer discretion is advised.
