Derek Chauvin: 14th Juror Seated in Murder Trial Over George Floyd's Death
Derek Chauvin: 14th Juror Seated in Murder Trial Over George Floyd's Death WorldViralMedia 7 צפיות • לִפנֵי 4 שנים

A 14th juror was seated Monday for the trial of a former Minneapolis police officer charged in George Floyd's death, nearly completing the panel ahead of opening statements next week.

The newest juror is a white social worker in her 20s who said she has talked with friends about police reform and that she thinks "there are things that should be changed."

But she also described police and their jobs as important, and said she is "always looking at every side of things."

Other potential jurors were dismissed earlier in the day.

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill said Friday that he wanted to select 15 jurors, with 12 to deliberate and three alternates who will deliberate only if needed.

But the court also said up to 16 could be chosen.

Floyd, who was Black, was declared dead May 25 after Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee on his neck for about nine minutes while he was handcuffed and pleading that he couldn't breathe.

Floyd's death, captured on a widely seen bystander video, set off weeks of sometimes violent protests across the country and led to a national reckoning on racial justice.

George Floyd could be heard pleading for his life and saying "I can't breathe" in four police body-camera videos prosecutors played for jurors Wednesday afternoon in the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

Prosecutors played videos from the body-cams of former officers Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, as well as part of Chauvin's video. The three officers are being tried in August for aiding and abetting Chauvin in the second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter of George Floyd.

Earlier, a witness who glimpsed the first moments of Floyd’s arrest broke down sobbing on the witness stand. Charles McMillian, 61, took off his glasses and wiped the tears from his eyes, saying "oh my god" after seeing video of Floyd calling for his mother and saying "I can't breathe." The court then took a brief break before McMillian returned to the stand.

The trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd, began Monday with opening arguments.

Special prosecutor Jerry Blackwell told the jurors that officers who wear the Minneapolis police badge pledge never to use "unnecessary force or violence."

"You will learn that on May 25, Mr. Derek Chauvin betrayed this badge when he used excessive and unreasonable force upon the body of George Floyd," he said.

Defence lawyer Eric Nelson used his opening statement to describe Floyd's drug use, his underlying health problems and a chaotic scene during the arrest. "Derek Chauvin did exactly what he was trained to do over the course of his 19-year career,” he stated.

The first witness was Jena Scurry, a Minneapolis 911 emergency dispatcher who watched live surveillance video footage of Floyd’s arrest. Scurry said her instinct told her “something is wrong," and that she called a supervising police sergeant.

Other witnesses included Donald Williams and Alisha Oyler, bystanders of the arrest.

Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. after the officer knelt on his neck for an extended period during an arrest. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted on the most serious charge.

More witnesses took the stand Tuesday in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, and some broke down in tears recounting their memory of the day George Floyd died.

The witnesses included a mixed martial arts fighter, the teenager who recorded the now viral video of Floyd's death, the teen's 9-year-old cousin, two high school seniorswho said they were headed to the store to get an auxiliary cord and a Minneapolis firefighter who witnessed the incident while out on a walk.

Two other witnesses – a 911 dispatcher and a cashier working across the street – testified Monday, and lawyers for the defense and prosecution opened the trial by laying out their case. Here's what you missed.

Floyd, a Black man, died in police custody on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin, who is white, pinned his knee against Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes as Floyd cried out "I can’t breathe" more than 20 times. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Derek Chauvin faces second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter charges in the killing of George Floyd after kneeling on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds in May 2020. During the first week of the trial, footage of Floyd’s deadly arrest was played for the jury, first hand witnesses got emotional when speaking about the scene they watched unfold, various first responders explained that Floyd showed no sign of life when they arrived at the scene, and a 35-year-veteran of the Minneapolis police department testified that Chauvin’s use of force was ‘totally unnecessary.’

(Mar. 29) The video of George Floyd gasping for breath was front and center Monday as the former Minneapolis police officer who pressed his knee on the Black man’s neck went on trial Monday on charges of murder and manslaughter.

Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell showed the jurors the footage at the earliest opportunity, during opening statements, after telling them that the number to remember was 9 minutes, 29 seconds — the amount of time officer Derek Chauvin had Floyd pinned to the pavement last May.

The white officer “didn’t let up” even after a handcuffed Floyd said 27 times that he couldn’t breathe and went limp, Blackwell said in the case that triggered worldwide protests, scattered violence and national soul-searching over racial justice.

“He put his knees upon his neck and his back, grinding and crushing him, until the very breath -- no, ladies and gentlemen -- until the very life was squeezed out of him,” the prosecutor said.

Chauvin attorney Eric Nelson countered by arguing: “Derek Chauvin did exactly what he had been trained to do over his 19-year career.”

Floyd was resisting arrest, and Chauvin arrived to assist other officers who were struggling to get Floyd into a squad car as the crowd around them grew larger and more hostile, Nelson said.

LIVE: Derek Chauvin Murder Trial Resumes in Minneapolis Over Death of George Floyd
LIVE: Derek Chauvin Murder Trial Resumes in Minneapolis Over Death of George Floyd WorldViralMedia 6 צפיות • לִפנֵי 4 שנים

(Apr. 7) The parade of Minneapolis police officers rejecting a former officer’s actions in restraining George Floyd continued at his murder trial, including a use-of-force instructor who said officers were coached to “stay away from the neck when possible.”

Lt. Johnny Mercil on Tuesday became the latest member of the Minneapolis force to take the stand as part of an effort by prosecutors to dismantle the argument that Derek Chauvin was doing what he was trained to do when he put his knee on George Floyd’s neck last May.

Several experienced officers, including the police chief himself, have testified that Floyd should not have been kept pinned to the pavement for close to 9 1/2 minutes by prosecutors’ reckoning as the Black man lay face-down, his hands cuffed behind his back.

According to testimony and records submitted Tuesday, Chauvin took a 40-hour course in 2016 on how to recognize people in crisis — including those suffering mental problems or the effects of drug use — and how to use de-escalation techniques to calm them down.

Sgt. Ker Yang, the Minneapolis police official in charge of crisis-intervention training, said officers are taught to “slow things down and re-evaluate and reassess.”

Records show Chauvin also underwent training in the use of force in 2018. Mercil said those who attended were taught that the sanctity of life is a cornerstone of departmental policy and that officers must use the least amount of force required to get a suspect to comply.

Under cross-examination by Chauvin attorney Eric Nelson, Mercil testified that officers are trained in some situations to use their knee across a suspect’s back or shoulder and employ their body weight to maintain control.

But Mercil added: “We tell officers to stay away from the neck when possible.”

Nelson has argued that the now-fired white officer “did exactly what he had been trained to do over his 19-year career,” and he has suggested that the illegal drugs in Floyd’s system and his underlying health conditions are what killed him, not Chauvin’s knee.
