10 SCARY THINGS FOUND IN THE AMAZON
The Amazon is home to myths and legends that are as vast and mysterious as the jungle itself. Some
have ancient roots, and others are urban legends that evolved after the European conquest. But one
thing is true across the board: The Amazon is filled to the brim with wonder and mystery.
The fast-disappearing Amazon rainforest and river harbors some amazing creatures. Most of us have
heard of vampire bats, piranhas, and the anaconda, but among the inhabitants are weird and wonderful
animals just as bizarre as the more famous ones, if not more so.
In the wilderness of the Amazon forest and in depths of the Amazon River, the largest river in the world,
live creatures so amazing and so terrifying, that they make Jaws look like a nice, relaxing swim in the
ocean. Here are the 10 most scary creatures found in the Amazon. Let’s go.
10. Black Caiman
A black caiman is basically an alligator on steroids. They can grow up to six meters long, with bigger,
heavier skulls than Nile crocodiles, and are the apex predator in the Amazonian waters. That means they
are basically the kings of the river—they eat nearly anything they can get their teeth into, including
piranhas, monkeys, perch, deer, and anaconda.
Some more facts? Well, they are the largest member of the Alligator family and the largest predator in
the whole Amazon river basin. Better watch out the next time you’re planning to go to the Amazon for
some adventure.
Oh, and yes, they totally attack humans. In 2010, a biologist named Deise Nishimura was attacked by a
caiman while cleaning a fish on her houseboat, and while she managed to fight it off, it took one of her
legs with it. This particular caiman had been living under her houseboat for eight months, evidently
waiting for the chance to strike.
9. Green Anaconda
Continuing with the theme of gigantic reptiles, the largest snake in the world makes its home in the
Amazon: the anaconda. While reticulated pythons are actually longer, green anaconda are far heavier;
the females, generally larger than males, can reach 250 kilograms or 550 lbs., grow to nine meters or
over 29 feet long and reach a foot in diameter.
They are not venomous but instead use their immense muscular power to constrict and suffocate their
prey, which includes capybara, deer, caiman, and even jaguars. Preferring shallower waters that allow
them to stealthily sneak up on their prey, they tend to live in offshoots of the Amazon rather than the
river itself.
The Anaconda has been given a bad reputation over the years of being a "man-eater", as a result of
movies and media. Even in Amazonian folklore, the Giant Anaconda snake is called an “Encantado,” a
shapeshifting mythical creature known for kidnapping humans they fall in love with.
While there have been claims and fake photos of Anacondas eating humans, it is unverified, and most
definitely not true. There was some stir recently over a Discovery Channel special called, “Eaten Alive”,
where a naturalist wearing a snake-proof suit was supposed to be eaten by a Green Anaconda. The

Anaconda wasn’t prone to eat the naturalist at all, was frighten and tried to escape. The Anaconda only
attacked him after much provocation.
Many people turned to Social Media to express their outrage of this irresponsible stunt, criticizing
Discovery Channel for airing something so completely out of scientific nature that would cause harm to
the animal.
That being said, while an encounter with an Anaconda snake could be dangerous, it is highly improbable
that the Anaconda would try to hunt or eat you.
8. Arapaima
Arapaima, also known as “pirarucu” or “paiche,” are gigantic carnivorous fish that live in the Amazon
and surrounding lakes. Encased in armored scales, they think nothing of living in piranha-infested
waters—and they are pretty effective predators themselves, feeding on fish and the occasional bird.
Arapaima tend to stay close to the surface, because they need to breathe surface air in addition to
taking in oxygen through their gills and make a distinctive coughing sound when they emerge for air.
They can reach 2.7 meters in length and weigh up to 90 kilograms, which makes it quite possibly the
largest freshwater fish. These fish are so vicious that even their tongue has teeth.
Arapaima have broad, bony heads, upturned mouths and streamlined bodies with a dorsal fin stretching
along their backs toward their tails, which are massive, yet stumpy in appearance. The head of the
arapaima is copperish-green in color, their bodies are black with a white center and their tails are red.

LIVE: Derek Chauvin Murder Trial Continues in Minneapolis Over Death of George Floyd
LIVE: Derek Chauvin Murder Trial Continues in Minneapolis Over Death of George Floyd WorldViralMedia 7 Views • 4 years ago

(Apr. 9) George Floyd died of a lack of oxygen from the way he was held down by police, a retired forensic pathologist testified Friday at former Officer Derek Chauvin’s murder trial.

The testimony of Lindsey Thomas, who retired in 2017 from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office in Minneapolis, bolstered the accounts of other experts on Thursday who rejected the defense theory that Floyd’s drug use and underlying health problems killed him.

Thomas did not work on Floyd’s case but agreed with the findings of her former colleague Hennepin County Medical Examiner Andrew Baker that Floyd died from cardiopulmonary arrest complicated by the way law enforcement restrained him and compressed his neck.

But she went further in saying “the primary mechanism of death is asphyxia, or low oxygen.”

“This is a death where both the heart and lungs stopped working. The point is, it’s due to law enforcement subdual, restraint and compression,” Thomas said. “The activities of the law enforcement officers resulted in Mr. Floyd’s death.”

Thomas said she reached her conclusion primarily from the video, which showed Floyd “in a position where he was unable to adequately breathe.”

The autopsy itself ruled out heart attack, aneurysm, COVID-19 and other factors, and Thomas said the video showed it was not a fentanyl overdose death.

Her testimony came a day after other medical experts also said Floyd died of a lack of oxygen.

“A healthy person subjected to what Mr. Floyd was subjected to would have died,” prosecution witness Dr. Martin Tobin, a lung and critical care specialist at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital and Loyola University’s medical school in Illinois, testified Thursday.

Tobin said the lack of oxygen resulted in brain damage and caused Floyd’s heart to stop.

Chauvin, 45, is charged with murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s death May 25 after kneeling on him for what prosecutors say was 9 1/2 minutes. Floyd was arrested outside a neighborhood market after being accused of trying to pass a counterfeit $20 bill.

Bystander video of Floyd crying that he couldn’t breathe as onlookers yelled at the white officer to get off him sparked protests and scattered violence around the U.S.

Chauvin attorney Eric Nelson has argued that Chauvin did what he was trained to do and that Floyd’s death was caused by illegal drugs and underlying medical problems, including high blood pressure and heart disease. An autopsy found fentanyl and methamphetamine in his system.

Using easy-to-understand language to explain medical concepts and even loosening his necktie to illustrate a point, Tobin told the jury that Floyd’s breathing was severely constricted while Chauvin and two other Minneapolis officers held the 46-year-old Black man down on his stomach with his hands cuffed behind him and his face jammed against the ground.

Tobin, analyzing images of the three officers restraining Floyd for what prosecutors say was almost 9 1/2 minutes, testified that Chauvin’s knee was “virtually on the neck” more than 90% of the time.

He said several other factors also made it difficult for Floyd to breathe: officers lifting up on the suspect’s handcuffs, the hard pavement, his prone position, his turned head and a knee on his back.

Tobin also testified that just because Floyd was talking and can be seen moving on video doesn’t mean he was breathing adequately. He said a leg movement seen in the footage was an involuntary sign of a fatal brain injury, and that a person can continue to speak until the airway narrows to 15%, after which “you are in deep trouble.”

Officers can be heard on video telling Floyd that if he can talk, he can breathe.

Live: Trial of George Floyd's alleged killer Derek Chauvin continues
Live: Trial of George Floyd's alleged killer Derek Chauvin continues WorldViralMedia 7 Views • 4 years ago

The murder trial of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing George Floyd, is continuing today as it enters its second week.

Evidence in the trial is now expected to turn to the officer’s training, after five days of emotional testimony from eyewitnesses.

Chauvin's defense team argues that the officer did what he was trained to do and that Floyd's use of drugs and underlying health conditions caused his death. However, his own colleagues and law enforcement officials have condemned the use of the knee restraint for nine minutes and 29 seconds, with veteran officer Derek Zimmerman describing it as “totally unnecessary”.

Police Chief Medaria Arradondo, who fired Chauvin and three other officers the day after Floyd's death, is expected to testify this week, possibly as early as Monday. “Mr. George Floyd's tragic death was not due to a lack of training — the training was there,” Arradondo said in June.

Experts have described the prosecution's decision to call the chief to give evidence against one of his own officers as very rare and “pretty remarkable”.
