Cities across America are reeling from a weekend of unrest during protests that erupted after George Floyd died during an arrest in Minneapolis. The unarmed black man died after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite cries from Floyd that he could not breathe.
Hundreds of people were arrested over the weekend as protesters and police clashed in cities across America after the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of Minneapolis police sparked more than 100 protests, rallies and vigils, according to NBC News.
Mayors of major cities from Los Angeles to Philadelphia to Atlanta imposed curfews and at least 12 states, as well as Washington, D.C., activated National Guard troops in an effort to keep the peace, but protests in several cities descended into violence again as tensions boiled over.
Derek Chauvin, the officer filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck, was arrested and charged with murder and manslaughter.
The social unrest over police brutality comes in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 100,000 Americans and led to the worst unemployment since the Great Depression. The unemployment rate hit 14.7% in April, a post-WWII record, and is likely to rise above 20%.
The black community has been hit disproportionately hard by Covid-19. Nearly 23% of all deaths from the pandemic are African American even though black people make up about 13% of the U.S. population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A looter has reportedly been shot dead by the owner of a pawn shop as violence erupted over the death of George Floyd.
Protests began peacefully before descending into violence in Minneapolis and Los Angeles as fury mounts over Floyd, who died after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck.
Footage includes a shocking moment a man falls off the hood of a police car during George Floyd rally in Los Angeles.
Minneapolis police chief John Elder confirmed at a press conference the rioting had turned deadly as a man was killed.
He confirmed the person had been shot and another man was being held in custody after a body was was found lying on the sidewalk outside the Cadillac Pawn & Jewelry.
Police officers attempted CPR on him but it was too late as Mr Elder said "everything was done that we could do to try to preserve this man's life".
The top cop refused to confirm reports the shooter was the owner of the pawn shop and if the man was attempting to loot the store.
He confirmed this was "one theory" but detectives are probing "a couple of different scenarios".
Video being circulated online shows a group of officers surrounding a man lying sprawled on the floor.
Voices from a gathered crowd can be heard shouting "f*** y'all" as one cop appears to be giving the man CPR.
Cops then disperse the onlookers, shouting "there is someone in there with a rifle" as two officers run towards a building appearing to have their weapons drawn.

On memorial day 2020 George Floyd was killed by police officers in Minneapolis. Since then peaceful protests have coincided with acts of vandalism. Here are scenes taken during a ride down a mile long section of Lake Street in the early afternoon of 5.28.2020. This is such a sad situation in every aspect, hopefully justice can be served and Minneapolis can learn, rebuild, and grow stronger.
