N.Y. Gov. Cuomo accuses Trump admin of possible criminal liability in Trusted Traveler lawsuit
N.Y. Gov. Cuomo accuses Trump admin of possible criminal liability in Trusted Traveler lawsuit WorldViralMedia 33 Views • 6 years ago

⁣New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo threatened to sue the Trump administration for damages over banning state residents from the Department of Homeland Security's Trusted Traveler Program, saying the agency "abused government resources to advance political purposes."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday threatened to sue the Trump administration for damages over banning state residents from the Department of Homeland Security’s Trusted Traveler Program, saying the agency “abused government resources to advance political purposes.”

Cuomo accused two DHS officials, acting Secretary Chad Wolf and acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli, of potential criminal liability.

“I believe Mr. Wolf and Mr. Cuccinelli have possible criminal liability. I believe there is civil liability. It was a clear abuse of government power for political purposes,” he said at a press conference in Albany.

On Thursday, DHS said it would lift its ban on New Yorkers from participating in the program, which allows for quicker entry at airports for U.S. citizens returning to the country. Cuomo said DHS told the state around 2 p.m. Thursday that it lifted the ban after New York agreed to share with U.S. immigration agencies the DMV records of people applying for TSA Precheck and other Trusted Traveler programs.

Later in the day, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York told U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman in a letter that DHS was dropping its opposition to New York’s previously announced lawsuit over the program, admitting the agency had made “inaccurate or misleading” statements.

“Defendants deeply regret the foregoing inaccurate or misleading statements and apologize to the court and plaintiffs for the need to make these corrections at this late stage in the litigation,” said Audrey Strauss, the acting United States attorney in Manhattan.

Cuomo told reporters at a press briefing Friday the DHS “made a startling revelation yesterday afternoon” that New York state isn’t the only state to have a Green Light law.

“It is impossible that the Department of Homeland Security just figured that out yesterday afternoon,” Cuomo said, adding that it is widely known. “What happened yesterday is they got caught.”

He called on U.S. Attorney General William Barr to launch an investigation and said the state will also seek possible civil damages from the DHS.

“The Department of Justice should do an investigation ... I think the Congress should investigate it because they lied and they did a lot of damage,” Cuomo said.

He said the state is trying to quantify the monetary damages. The ban backed up trucking and air cargo deliveries at New York borders for six months, costing the Port Authority more money to run the airports, he said. It also packed people into long lines waiting to be screened at airports at a crucial time when Covid-19 was just starting to circulate in the U.S. “How do you quantify that?” he asked.

The DHS and Customs and Border Protection did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.

The U.S. offers several so-called trusted traveler programs that allow for quicker entry for U.S. citizens returning to the country. They include Global Entry, which for a $100 fee and a background check, allows air travelers to reenter the U.S. faster, and a program dedicated to commercial truck drivers crossing the border back into the U.S

Minneapolis mayor calls for charges in George Floyd death, politicians react to incident
Minneapolis mayor calls for charges in George Floyd death, politicians react to incident WorldViralMedia 13 Views • 6 years ago

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, U.S. President Donald Trump and former vice president and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden reacted on Wednesday to the death of George Floyd.

Frey on Wednesday called for Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman to charge the white police officer who arrested George Floyd, a black man, and was seen on video appearing to press his knee onto Floyd’s neck. Floyd could be heard saying that he could not breathe and eventually stopped moving. The officer was one of four fired a day after Floyd's death, but it's not yet known whether the incident will be considered criminal.

Walz commented that seeing the video left him "shocked and horrified," and said that he shared "that primal scream of watching humanity get erased in front of you." Attorney general Keith Ellison, who joined Walz, said the investigation would proceed with a degree of objectivity, but stressed they were dealing with a "systemic problem" and change needs to happen.

Trump made brief remarks while at the Kennedy Space Center for the eventual scrubbed mission of the SpaceX Demo-2 launch, saying it was a "very, very sad" event and they would look into the incident.

Prior to a discussion with Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, Biden also spoke saying that George Floyd's "life mattered" and said the video reminded him of Eric Garner, another black man who died in 2014 after a New York City police officer put him in a chokehold. Garner, like Floyd, had told the officer he couldn't breathe prior to his death. The former vice president said that while the firing of the officers was right, they had to "ensure the Floyd family receives the justice they're entitled to" and said more is needed than just the officers' firing.

What Is CBD Oil And How Did It Become A $1 Billion Industry?
What Is CBD Oil And How Did It Become A $1 Billion Industry? WorldViralMedia 35 Views • 6 years ago

You might have noticed a lot of products lately that are infused with CBD. But what exactly is CBD? CBD stands for cannabidiol, and it's part of the cannabis plant from which we also get marijuana. We spoke with Martin A. Lee, author of "Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana - Medical, Recreational and Scientific" and the director of Project CBD to find out what exactly CBD is.

Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, science, retail, and more.

Following is a transcript of the video:

Narrator: With all the weed trucks and imagery all over New York these days, you might think to yourself, "Hey, is marijuana legal now?"

Not quite.

What these companies are selling is actually something called CBD. It's found in everything from lollipops to lattes.

And business is booming.

CBD products are part of what is estimated to be a roughly one billion dollar industry in the United States. And it's perfectly legal.

So, what does CBD have that marijuana doesn't?

Martin Lee: The fact of the matter is we're kind of in the midst of a CBD craze right now.

Narrator: Martin Lee is the director of Project CBD, an educational platform that focuses on cannabis science and therapeutics.

Lee: CBD stands for cannabidiol. That's a component of the cannabis plant that has significant therapeutic properties, but it's not intoxicating. It doesn't get you high like THC.

Narrator: As it happens, not all cannabis plants are created equal. Take a look at these two varieties. One is marijuana, the other is hemp. One gets you high, the other doesn't. The key difference is what's on the inside.

Lee: THC and CBD are the main components of the cannabis plant.

Narrator: THC is what makes you feel high, and marijuana plants are loaded with it.

Dave Chappelle: I don't know about y'all, but I can't even move.

Narrator: Hemp, on the other hand, has hardly any THC at all. But what it lacks in THC it makes up for with higher amounts of CBD. Now, CBD won't get you high, but it does have a redeeming quality: it's legal. And at least according to the marketing, it has a relaxing effect. So since this stuff is all the rage, let's see how it's made.

So, once you have a cannabis plant, one simple way to make extract can be done in your own kitchen.

Lee: As simple as using olive oil or butter and heating the trim from the plant or a little bit of the green material from the plant. Obviously that's not very useful for mass industrial production, to be cooking up something in your kitchen with butter and cannabis.

Narrator: But the more common way involves a specialized, complex machine.

Lee: One very widespread way is using what's called a supercritical CO2 extraction. It's ground up to have the texture initially of like a coffee grind. And it's poured into vessels, literally, of a supercritical CO2 machine. It will stay in that machine for upwards to 24 hours under different pressures and temperatures at different times of the extraction process. And ultimately you'll end up with a thick, golden oil that's very waxy in texture.

Narrator: You can also extract it using ethanol and hydrocarbons.

You can find this oil in a number of different products these days.

Lee: It can be administered in various different forms. It might be ingested, it might be applied topically.

Narrator: They even have CBD oil products for your pets. I stopped by a cafe in New York which sells all sorts of CBD-infused products. I tried a CBD matcha latte and a CBD macaroon. These snacks tasted great, and I felt a little more relaxed after, but it was hard to tell if the CBD was actually doing anything for me or if it was all in my head.

Scientists are actually still trying to figure out exactly how CBD affects the body.

Lee: So, there really is a scientific basis for understanding why CBD can work, but we're still really a long way of mastering the hows.

Narrator: Still, CBD may have more benefits than just a relaxing afternoon. Some initial studies have shown that CBD can help with a number of different medical conditions. In fact, in June 2018, the FDA approved the first CBD drug, Epidiolex, which is used to treat epilepsy.

So, who knows?

Perhaps we'll be seeing CBD in more places than just cannabis-decorated vans in the future.
