Moyers & Company presents "United States of ALEC," a report on the most influential corporate-funded political force most of America has never heard of -- ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council. A national consortium of state politicians and powerful corporations, ALEC presents itself as a "nonpartisan public-private partnership". But behind that mantra lies a vast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to increase corporate profits at public expense without public knowledge.

Using interviews, documents, and field reporting, the episode explores ALEC's self-serving machine at work, acting in a way one Wisconsin politician describes as "a corporate dating service for lonely legislators and corporate special interests."

In state houses around the country, hundreds of pieces of boilerplate ALEC legislation are proposed or enacted that would, among other things, dilute collective bargaining rights, make it harder for some Americans to vote, and limit corporate liability for harm caused to consumers -- each accomplished without the public ever knowing who's behind it.

"All of us here are very familiar with ALEC and the influence that ALEC has with many of the [legislative] members," says Arizona State Senator Steve Farley. "Corporations have the right to present their arguments, but they don't have the right to do it secretly."

"United States of ALEC" is a collaboration between Okapi Productions LLC and the Schumann Media Center, headed by Bill Moyers, which supports independent journalism and public watchdogs including the Center for Media and Democracy, whose investigators are featured in the report.

The video of George Floyd gasping for breath was essentially Exhibit A as the former Minneapolis police officer who pressed his knee on the Black man's neck went on trial Monday on charges of murder and manslaughter.

Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell showed the jurors the footage at the earliest opportunity, during opening statements, after telling them that the number to remember was 9 minutes, 29 seconds - the amount of time officer Derek Chauvin had Floyd pinned to the pavement last May.

More witnesses took the stand Tuesday in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, and some broke down in tears recounting their memory of the day George Floyd died.

The witnesses included a mixed martial arts fighter, the teenager who recorded the now viral video of Floyd's death, the teen's 9-year-old cousin, two high school seniorswho said they were headed to the store to get an auxiliary cord and a Minneapolis firefighter who witnessed the incident while out on a walk.

Two other witnesses – a 911 dispatcher and a cashier working across the street – testified Monday, and lawyers for the defense and prosecution opened the trial by laying out their case. Here's what you missed.

Floyd, a Black man, died in police custody on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin, who is white, pinned his knee against Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes as Floyd cried out "I can’t breathe" more than 20 times. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Chauvin knelt on 46-year-old George Floyd's neck for nearly eight minutes on May 25 as Floyd told Chauvin and three other officers he couldn't breathe. Before the trial, outside the courthouse, George Floyd's nephew said he's in Minnesota for one thing: "We came to get justice and nothing less." Chauvin is being tried on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd's death. He has pleaded not guilty.

George Floyd murder trial opens for ex-policeman Derek Chauvin | DW News WorldViralMedia 7 Vues • 5 années depuis

A jury was assembled at the Hennepin County Court on Monday, as the opening of the trial of former Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin got underway. Chauvin is accused of murdering unarmed Black man George Floyd by kneeling on his neck – a killing that was caught on camera and which sparked outrage across the world. The trial, in downtown Minneapolis, is expected to last some four weeks and is taking place under high-security conditions. Relatives and lawyers for Floyd's family knelt in protest outside the courthouse, immediately ahead of the start of the hearing. They took a knee for eight minutes and 46 seconds — the amount of time that Chauvin was seen kneeling on Floyd's neck in the video.

What must the court decide?
The key question will be whether Chauvin was responsible for Floyd's death, and whether his actions were reasonable.
The former officer could be convicted on any one of three counts – second-degree murder, third-degree murder, or manslaughter.
Prosecutors would have to prove that Chauvin's conduct was a substantial factor to have him convicted of unintentional second-degree murder.
To have Chauvin convicted of third-degree murder, they would need to show that Chauvin's actions were reckless and without regard for human life.
The charge of manslaughter requires proof that Chauvin caused Floyd's death through negligence that created an unreasonable risk.

Portland saw over 100 nights of protests following the death of George Floyd on Memorial Day. Demonstrators have rallied around issues that include police brutality, racial inequity and the defunding of police.
