BREAKING NEWS - The electoral college is poised to pick Trump
BREAKING NEWS - The electoral college is poised to pick Trump WorldViralMedia 23 意见 • 4 年 前

The electoral college is poised to pick Trump, despite push to dump him <br />Donald Trump is on the verge of being officially declared the winner of the 2016 presidential election, as the electoral college meets on Monday to officially seal his victory. The usually overlooked, constitutionally obligated gatherings of 538 electors in 50 states and the District of Columbia continued throughout the day with no sign of defections among electors poised to vote for Trump. By mid-afternoon, Trump was poised to top the 270 electoral votes needed to become president. Results will be officially announced on Jan. 6 in a special joint session of Congress. How does the electoral college actually vote? An explainer. Democrat Hillary Clinton amassed a nearly 3 million-vote lead in the popular vote, but Trump won the state-by-state electoral map — making him president-elect. That political dichotomy has sparked special scrutiny and intense lobbying of electors by Trump’s opponents, including last-minute protests across the country. On Monday in Austin, more than 100 people braved cold temperatures to rally at the Texas state capitol ahead of an afternoon meeting of electors. In Utah, protesters booed and shouted “shame on you” as the state’s six electors cast votes for Trump in a state capitol conference room in Salt Lake City. In Pennsylvania, which voted for a Republican president for the first time since 1988, a few hundred shell-shocked Democrats protested at the state capitol in Harrisburg while 20 electors backed Trump. In Florida, a crucial swing state where Trump defeated Clinton by about a percentage point, Trump won all 29 electoral votes Monday afternoon. A few minutes later, Trump clinched all 16 votes in Michigan, another state that flipped to Republicans for the first time since 1988. On the streets of Washington, two dozen protesters assembled outside Trump’s hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, singing songs such as “We Shall Overcome.” Some held signs, including one that read, “Resist Putin’s Puppet.” The District’s three electors will meet Monday afternoon at city hall, which is just a block from Trump’s hotel. In Albany, N.Y., former president Bill Clinton sat in the State Senate chamber as an elector and cast one of the Empire State’s 29 electoral votes for his wife. “I’ve never cast a vote I was prouder of,” he told reporters after the meeting. The mostly symbolic calls for an electoral college rejection of Trump have grown following revelations of a CIA assessment of Russian hacking that could have boosted Trump’s campaign and, in the view of many Trump critics, raised doubts about his legitimacy.

In interview with Fauci, Zuckerberg says U.S. failed on coronavirus response
In interview with Fauci, Zuckerberg says U.S. failed on coronavirus response WorldViralMedia 23 意见 • 5 年 前

In a wide-ranging discussion Thursday with Dr. Anthony Fauci, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted that the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic — in which more than 138,000 Americans have died — has been “significantly worse” than in the rest of the world. Fauci did not disagree, but said the nation needs to “call a time-out” to “regroup.”

“While every other developed country in the world, or almost every other country, has had a relatively smaller number of new infections, we now face a record number of new infections every day,” Zuckerberg said near the start of the nearly hourlong discussion, which was carried live on Facebook. “At this point it is clear that the trajectory in the U.S. is significantly worse than many other countries and that our government and this administration have been considerably less effective in handling this. I personally think we need to take this a lot more seriously and our understanding of the disease is evolving and our response needs to be guided by science and our latest scientific understanding.”

Zuckerberg asked Fauci what we needed to do as a nation to improve.

“As you described accurately, Mark, we do have a serious situation now. I mean, it’s a mixed bag. There are parts of the country that are doing well, the Northeastern part, particularly the New York metropolitan area, was hit very hard,” Fauci responded, adding that we needed to pay more attention to the Southern states, where cases and deaths were spiking, and took issue with local officials who enacted insufficient social distancing restrictions and rushed to reopen society. “We’ve really got to almost regroup. Call a time-out. Not necessarily lock down again, but say ‘We’ve got to do this in a more measured way.’ We’ve got to get our arms around this, and we’ve got to get this controlled.”

Zuckerberg said he agreed with the need for a reset, but didn’t back away from his criticisms of the Trump administration.

“I was certainly sympathetic early on when it was clear that there would be some outbreaks no matter how well we handled this,” Zuckerberg told Fauci in a conversation that was broadcast live on the social media network, “but now that we’re here in July I just think it was avoidable and it’s really disappointing that we still don’t have adequate testing, that the credibility of our top scientists like yourself and the CDC are being undermined and, until recently, that parts of the administration were calling into question whether people should even follow best practices like wearing masks.”

Members of President Trump’s administration have attacked Fauci in recent days, circulating to reporters a list of statements the infectious disease specialist has made since the emergence of the pandemic that they claim were wrong.

“That’s really the nature of science,” Fauci replied. “You look at the information and the data that you have at any given time, and you make a decision on policy based on that information. As the information changes, then you have to be flexible enough and humble enough to change how you think about things.”

Earlier on Tuesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also criticized Trump for not heeding the advice from scientists on how to safely reopen society, including the nation’s schools.

“Mr. President, admit it: You’ve gone down the wrong path. Ask for direction. Ask for direction from our scientists,” Pelosi said.

With the number of cases spiking in dozens of states across the country, Zuckerberg asked Fauci what steps he thought the country should take in order to reset our response to the pandemic.

“I would recommend as strong as possibly can to get people to wear masks,” Fauci said, “to avoid crowds, to keep distances — outdoors always better than indoors.”

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany was asked by Yahoo News on Thursday whether Trump planned on issuing a nationwide order requiring face masks.

“We leave it to localities to make the decisions with regard to face coverings. [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] guidelines remain the same today: recommended but not required,” McEnany said.

Over the course of the past week, Trump has pushed states to reopen public schools and has threatened to withhold federal funding to those districts that refuse. Fauci said that he agrees with making reopening schools a priority, but stopped short of Trump’s call to resume in person classes despite the health risks.

“To the extent possible, our default should be to try and get the children back to school. The reason I say that is that the unintended ripple effects, downstream consequences of keeping the children out of school can be profound,” Fauci said, while warning that the virus was spreading too fast in some areas to do so fully.

Fauci said some districts should look at modifications to a full reopening, including staggering attendance, separating students with compromised immune systems and holding classes outside. “It can be done,” he concluded.

Police: 3 Women Face Battery Charges After Attack On Spirit Airlines’ Employees At Broward Airport
Police: 3 Women Face Battery Charges After Attack On Spirit Airlines’ Employees At Broward Airport WorldViralMedia 23 意见 • 5 年 前

⁣⁣Three women are facing battery charges after authorities say they attacked Spirit Airlines employees at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Tuesday evening.
Part of the incident was captured on cellphone video and was sparked after a flight delay.

⁣The arrest report says BSO deputies arrived at the Spirit Airlines gate where a disturbance was taking place.

⁣Broward Sheriff Office deputies say Danaysha Akia Cuthbert Dixon, 22, Kaira Candida Ferguson, 21, and Tymaya Monique Wright, 20, all from Philadelphia, “intentionally struck Spirit Airlines employees with phones, shoes, full water bottles, and metal signs.”
An airports spokesperson released the following statement on the incident:
“The safety and security of the traveling public and airport employees is part of our core mission. The behavior of the individuals as seen in the video during Tuesday’s incident is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our facility. We applaud the prompt response by our airline partner and the Broward Sheriff’s Office”.
Spirit Airlines released the following statement:
“We thank our Team Members for their professionalism and quick actions, and we also thank the Broward Sheriff’s Office for their assistance at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport yesterday. Three guests became combative following a delayed flight, and they were arrested for physically assaulting our Team Members. Three of our Team Members sustained minor injuries. This violent behavior is completely unacceptable and has absolutely no place in airports or any other place of business. We will not tolerate abusive behavior of any kind. Further questions about this incident should be referred to law enforcement.”
In 2017, the low-cost airline was in the midst of a contract dispute with pilots. Canceled flights led to an angry mob forming at the Broward airport. Deputies had to be called in to break it up.
One of the women arrested is also accused of stealing a phone from one of the Spirt employees, investigators said. Authorities said they found the phone inside a backpack.
The women were taken into custody and were transported to the Broward main jail.
