States around the country ratcheted up their response to demonstrations protesting the death of George Floyd on Saturday, using force as some gatherings escalated into violence.
The killing of Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed black man who died after being pinned to the ground during an arrest by Minneapolis police on Monday, sparked nationwide protests this week as anger over the treatment of black Americans by the country's law enforcement and justice system continues to intensify.
The Pentagon announced Saturday that it was electing to place select military units on a four-hour recall status, should Gov. Tim Walz (D) require additional reinforcements to contain demonstrations in the state.

A jewellery shop in downtown LA was the target of looting as several cities in the USA protested about George Floyd's killing on Friday.
People could be seen breaking into the shop and removing display cabinets, as they emptied drawers. The shop door was visibly damaged, with the shutters pulled up. Looters could also be seen splitting their loot outside the shop, with some half covering their faces.
A wave of protests began on Tuesday, just a day after Floyd's death, but have since descended into riots, complete with lawlessness, brawling and looting.
The rallies were sparked after the death of a 46-year-old African American in Minneapolis on Monday, after a police officer was recorded kneeling on his neck for nearly ten minutes.
The police officer who was seen putting his knee on the back of Floyd's neck was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.
