Police clashed with protesters for a second night in the Minneapolis suburb where an officer who authorities say apparently intended to fire a Taser, not a handgun, fatally shot a Black man during a traffic stop.
Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon described the shooting death Sunday of 20-year-old Daunte Wright as "an accidental discharge." The shooting sparked protests and unrest in an area already on edge because of the trial of the first of four police officers charged in George Floyd's death.
Hundreds of protesters faced off against police in Brooklyn Center after nightfall Monday, and hours after a dusk-to-dawn curfew was announced by the governor. When the protesters wouldn't disperse, police began firing gas canisters and flash-bang grenades, sending clouds wafting over the crowd and chasing some protesters away. A long line of police in riot gear, rhythmically pushing their clubs in front of them, began slowly forcing back the remaining crowds.

A suspect was shot and killed early Friday in Brooklyn Center following a struggle with an officer. The shooting happened after police conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Shingle Creek Parkway and the entrance ramp to westbound I-94.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation. The Brooklyn Center officer involved in the fatal shooting is on standard administrative leave. The officer's name has not been released. Authorities also have not released the identity of the man killed. It's also unknown if the man was carrying a gun.
This was the second time in 24 hours that Brooklyn police were called to the area. The officer-involved shooting happened not far from where another man was killed early Thursday in a separate case. Police do not believe the two incidents are related.
The last time Brooklyn Center police shot and killed someone was last May when a 20-year old man was walking down 53rd Street carrying a rifle. That man, 20-year-old Dontaylo Wright, was asked by officers to drop the weapons, but did not comply.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has enacted a curfew in the Twin Cities metro counties Monday night after a night of unrest that followed the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Black man during a traffic stop.
Walz joined Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and law enforcement officials to announce a state of emergency and a curfew in Hennepin, Ramsey and Anoka counties, which will begin at 7 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
The announcement comes hours after Brooklyn Center's police chief released body camera footage of the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright on Sunday.
Police Chief Tim Gannon on Monday said that he believes the officer who shot Wright accidentally discharged her firearm. He said he believes the officer meant to fire a Taser, not her handgun.
Gannon also confirmed that the officer is on administrative leave.

Police officer who shot a Minnesota man has resigned. Kim Potter submitted her letter of resignation Tuesday morning after shooting Daunte Wright.
Wright was fatally shot during a traffic stop. He was 20 years-old.
The fatal shooting of Daunte Wright, a Black man, after being pulled over by police in Minnesota, along with the newly release video of a Black Army officer, held at gunpoint and pepper-sprayed by police, are raising tensions in the Minneapolis area as former police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial, accused of murdering George Floyd.

A deli clerk was shot dead Tuesday in the Bronx, police say.
The shooting occurred just before 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of White Plains Road and East 216th Street at Deli Grocery in Williamsbridge.
Police say the 20-year-old victim from Yemen was taken to Montefiore Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
An 18-year-old male suspect fled on foot with a 25-year-old woman, according to authorities, but were quickly taken into custody. The NYPD also recovered a weapon at the scene.
While frightened customers hit the floor, witnesses say the clerk who was working behind the counter at the deli didn't have a chance.

Hennepin County investigators have cleared a Robbinsdale police officer who shot and injured a woman armed with a knife April 16. It was a case in which some residents said too much force was used.
A bystander used a cell phone to record the aftermath of the officer-involved shooting in the 3700 block of Hubbard Avenue. A Hennepin County Sheriff's Office investigation says Sgt. Thomas Rothfork acted appropriately when he shot 18-year-old Tania Harris. Rothfork is a 20-year police veteran.
Police also released still pictures taken from a squad car's video camera. The first picture shows a woman brushing past the officer. Police say she was fleeing a woman who had just come out of the apartment building yelling threats and carrying a knife. The second picture shows Harris a few feet from the officer still holding the knife, even though police say she had been told to drop it.
When Harris got within five to 10 feet of the officer, Sgt. Rothfork fired twice, hitting Harris in the abdomen. Police say it all happened in a matter of five to six seconds.
Harris survived her injuries and was charged with 2nd-degree assault. A trial date is set for Sept. 21.
Hennepin County authorities said the shooting was justified under state law, which allows officers to use deadly force to protect the officer or someone else from death or great bodily harm.

A driver is dead after police shot the person as they attempted to leave a traffic stop, according to Brooklyn Center police.
According to a press release from the Brooklyn Center Police Department, officers were attempting to make a traffic stop near the 6300 block of Orchard Avenue just before 2 p.m. when they said they noticed the driver had an outstanding warrant.
While police were attempting to take the suspect into custody, the driver re-entered the vehicle and one of the officers fired their weapon and hit the driver, according to the release.
Police said they attempted live-saving measures but the person eventually died at the scene.
The release said the vehicle then traveled "several blocks" before colliding with another vehicle. A female passenger in the car was transported to North Memorial Hospital with injuries related to the crash, according to the release.
