DISCORD!:

Brooklyn Center Police Department has confirmed a man was fatally shot by an officer following a traffic stop Sunday afternoon.

The department has confirmed the man was fatally wounded after being shot by an officer shortly after officers had initiated a traffic stop on the 6300 block of Orchard Avenue.

A woman speaking at the scene has said that her 20-year-old son, named Daunte Wright, was the man killed.

This information has yet to be officially confirmed.

Police have issued a statement you can read below, but it does not state what traffic violation the victim was pulled over for, and to what the outstanding warrant was in relation.

A crowd has gathered at the scene asking the police for answers, leading to tense scenes that has thus far seen a squad car damaged and rubber bullets fired by police.

Note: The details provided in this statement are based on the police’s latest version of events, and may be subject to change.

Brooklyn Center Police Department officers initiated a stop for a traffic violation in the area of the 6300 block of Orchard Ave. in Brooklyn Center shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday.

Officers determined that the driver of the vehicle had an outstanding warrant. At one point as officers were attempting to take the driver into custody, the driver re-entered the vehicle.

One officer discharged their firearm, striking the driver. The vehicle traveled several blocks before striking another vehicle.

Officers in pursuit and responding medical personnel attempted life saving measures, but the person died at the scene. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the person’s name following a preliminary autopsy and family notification.

A female passenger in the vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries during the crash. She was transported to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale.

Occupants of the vehicle that was struck during the crash were uninjured.

Brooklyn Center officers wear body-worn cameras. We believe both body-worn cameras and dash cameras were activated during this incident.

In 2015, 51 years on from desegregation, the American police killed over 100 unarmed African-Americans. They represented 37% of police deaths, despite occupying only 13% of the population. Black Lives Matter continues to push for racial justice, but is a global movement growing in controversy as much as it is prominence. This event brings together the mothers of individuals whose deaths have drawn attention to racist and even fatal law enforcement with the founders of the movement.

Panellists:

Sybrina Fulton - Mother of Trayvon Martin

Geneva Reed-Veal - Mother of Sandra Bland

Valerie Bell - Mother of Sean Bell

Gwen Carr - Mother of Eric Garner

Protesters took to the streets on Monday in Washington, D.C. just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the nation on the ongoing protests rocking many U.S. states.

In his televised remarks, Trump said a 7 p.m. curfew would be “strictly enforced” within Washington D.C. as well, promising lengthy jail sentences and severe criminal penalties for anyone caught breaking the law.

According to The Associated Press, between 600 and 800 National Guard members from five states were now being sent to assist the U.S. capital, citing senior defence officials.

Earlier on Monday, Trump had mocked the nation’s governors as “weak,” demanding that they enforce tougher crackdowns and more arrests in their states amid another night of violent protest in several American cities.

The protests, which were sparked by the death of George Floyd — a Black man who died of suffocation after a video showed a white Minneapolis police officer with a knee on Floyd’s neck — have now entered their second week.
